Sunlight May Prevent Lung Cancer: I'm Off to the Beach

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have determined that the further from the equator, the more likely that a country's residents will have a greater incidence of lung cancer. The scientists believe that this may be due to the Vitamin D from the sunlight, especially UVB light, that helps to inhibit the production of tumors, and people who live closer to the North and South Poles have less exposure to the sunlight than those close to the equator. They looked at over 110 countries around the world.

One thing that the scientists mentioned was that as long as the exposure to sunlight was only moderate, the possibility of causing melanoma did not significantly increase. The research was written up in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
